Saint Patrick’s Day Green Tea Truffles

Melt the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Take care not to overheat the chocolate.Saint Patrick’s Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. I love the vibrant green everywhere, the sense of celebration, and of course, the chance to get creative in the kitchen. Over the years, I’ve experimented with a few fun desserts that embrace the spirit of the holiday, but these Green Tea Truffles are definitely one of my all-time favorites. They’re a perfect balance of creamy, sweet, and just the right amount of earthy flavor, making them a treat I look forward to every year.

Making these truffles is also such a relaxing process. The combination of simple ingredients, like cream cheese, powdered sugar, and a hint of matcha powder, comes together effortlessly, and the rich white chocolate coating adds that extra indulgence. I love how easy it is to make them, yet they always look like a showstopper when served! Plus, they’re the perfect way to bring a little festive flair to any Saint Patrick’s Day gathering, whether it’s a big party or a quiet night in.

The best part? These truffles are incredibly customizable. You can adjust the amount of matcha for a stronger flavor or play with the green coloring to suit your mood. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to finish them off with that delicate drizzle of green chocolate for an extra touch of elegance. They’re a simple yet delicious way to celebrate the season, and I can’t wait for you to give them a try!

Ingredients

For the truffles:

  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened: This creamy base gives the truffles their rich and smooth texture.
  • 2 cups powdered sugar: Adds the perfect sweetness and helps achieve a smooth, velvety consistency.
  • 2/3 teaspoon matcha powder: Infuses the truffles with a subtle earthy flavor and vibrant green color.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract: Enhances the flavor with a hint of warmth and sweetness.
  • Green food coloring (gel works best): Adds a festive pop of green to the truffles, making them visually striking.

For the coating:

  • 2 ½ cups white chocolate melts or shredded white chocolate: Provides a smooth, creamy coating that perfectly complements the green filling.
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional, for smoother drizzle): Helps create a smoother, more fluid chocolate for a beautiful drizzle.
  • Optional, to garnish: a pinch of matcha powder: A light dusting of matcha adds a touch of elegance and reinforces the green theme.

For the green filling:

1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese until it reaches a smooth consistency.

2. Slowly incorporate the powdered sugar, matcha powder, and vanilla extract, mixing until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.

3. Add a few drops of green food coloring and mix until the filling reaches a vibrant green hue. Adjust the color by adding more drops as needed.

4. Scoop the mixture into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter, and arrange them on a rack or a parchment-lined baking sheet. Freeze for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.

For the white chocolate coating:

1. Melt the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Take care not to overheat the chocolate.

2. If you’d like to decorate the truffles with green drizzling, set aside some of the melted white chocolate and mix it with green food coloring. Add a few drops at a time until you achieve your desired shade of green.

3. Take the green filling balls out of the freezer.

4. Using a fork, toothpick, or dipping tool, dip each frozen ball into the melted white chocolate, allowing any excess to drip off. Place the coated truffles back on the rack or parchment paper. Repeat with all the truffles.

5. Optionally, sprinkle a pinch of matcha powder on top. It’s easier if the coating is still slightly warm, as the matcha will stick better to the surface.

6. If you’re using the green melted chocolate to decorate, dip a teaspoon into the mixture and drizzle it over the truffles in a zig-zag pattern.

7. Allow the white chocolate coating to set completely, either at room temperature or in the refrigerator for quicker results.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I make these truffles ahead of time? Yes! These truffles can be made up to two days in advance. Just store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep them fresh and firm until you’re ready to serve them.

2. Can I substitute the cream cheese with something else? If you’re looking for a dairy-free alternative, you can try using vegan cream cheese or cashew cream for a similar texture. However, this may slightly alter the flavor, so keep that in mind!

3. Can I use a different type of chocolate for the coating? While white chocolate provides a smooth, sweet contrast to the green filling, you could use milk or dark chocolate if you prefer. Just be sure to adjust the sweetness accordingly.

4. How do I store the truffles? Store your truffles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. If you’d like to freeze them, place them on a baking sheet to freeze individually before transferring to a freezer-safe container, where they can last for up to 2 months.

5. Can I make these truffles without the green food coloring? Absolutely! The food coloring is optional and just adds a fun festive touch. The truffles will still taste delicious without it.

6. Can I use regular matcha powder instead of culinary matcha? Yes, you can use regular matcha powder, but culinary-grade matcha tends to have a smoother flavor and better color, making it ideal for recipes like these truffles.
