Birds Eye Ketchips

If you grew up in the eighties, then you might remember Birds Eye Ketchips. They were available in the last eighties and early nineties and were a strange combination of mashed potato and red hot ketchup created to satisfy the appetite of a nation of ketchup lovers.

Chips with ketchup just go together, so surely Ketchips were destined to be a huge hit? Sadly not. Rather than being chips injected with a real tomato ketchup centre which could have worked, Ketchips were more of a mushy, potato croquette. They had a spiky outer potato consistency and were filled with a tomato sauce centre that reached lava-like temperatures when cooked.

They could be grilled, baked or fried and could have been a perfect alternative to frozen chips. But frozen food giant Birds Eye didn’t really hit the spot with Ketchips, and they didn’t last long.

This advert in 1989 featured a number of children including actress Kellie Bright sharing what they loved about Ketchips.

“Crispy, spiky tubes of delicious mashed potato with a real tomato ketchup centre.”

Sadly, Ketchips never really took off.
