Secret Chocolate Bar

Hands up who remembers this classic retro bar – the Secret chocolate bar? The Secret bar was a truly unique bar that was loved by many in the 80s and 90s.

Who made the Secret chocolate bar?

The well-loved bar was made by Rowntree Mackintosh Confectionery who were later bought by the better known Nestlé.

When was it made?

The tasty treats were first launched in the 1980s and continued to be made and sold through to the 1990s, so if you were around in those heady decades, then the chances are you remember these being sold in your local shop.

What was inside a Secret chocolate bar?

The Secret chocolate bar was a one of a kind and for those who loved it’s unique taste, it’s an absolute tragedy that it’s no longer available to buy.

The bar consisted of a birds-nest type chocolate outer shell, with a creamy mousse centre. The closest thing we couldn’t liken it to would be the Walnut Whip which is also made by Nestlé. It was one of a kind and I’ve never seen another bar like it since.

The bar came in a golden wrapper with a protective cardboard insert to prevent the nest-like chocolate from breaking. The name “Secret” was written across the wrapper in luxurious purple writing.

Nestlé Secret advert

As with any popular chocolate bar at the time, the adverts for the Secret chocolate bar became well known and well-loved. First shown in 1990, perhaps the most famous advert featured an elegant lady in the 1940s riding a train carriage. She’s handed a Secret bar by a man who claims “they’re after me” and asks her to guard his bar. Perhaps predictably, she can’t resist eating the bar, and the tag line at the end of the advert claims “You can’t trust anyone to keep a secret…”

Why was the Secret chocolate bar discontinued?

In the 1990s, Nestlé decided that it was the right time to stop selling their Secret bars. The decision was made due to a combination of high production costs and low sales. The decision has been met with lots of protest since then, but Nestlé have stood their ground (so far) and declined to remake the popular bar.

Petition Nestlé Rowntrees to relaunch the Secret chocolate bar

The Secret chocolate bar is a retro treat that many fans would love to see returning to supermarket shelves. So much so, that there is even a petition to get Nestlé to relaunch the bar. Cadbury’s relaunch of the Wispa bar added fuel to the fire, showing that it is possible for chocolate bars to make a return and become even more popular than ever. Back in 2007, there was a huge Twitter storm with chocolate lovers demanding that the Wispa be brought back. Cadbury’s relented and the Wispa bar returned. It’s still hugely popular to this day!

The relauch of the Wispa fuelled the fire for fans of the Secret chocolate bar.Do you remember the Secret chocolate bar? Was a firm favourite when you were younger? Or perhaps there are other retro chocolate bars or sweets that you have fond memories of. It’s amazing how food from our childhood brings back such fond memories.
