A look Back at the Cornish Strawberry Mivvi Ice Cream
There are some treats from our childhoods that just stand out in our minds. The Strawberry Mivvi was definitely one of those!
Mivvi Ice Creams were made by Lyons Maid, an ice cream manufacturer that first launched way back in 1925 and the Cornish Strawberry flavour Mivvi in particular was a huge hit. Mivvi Ice Creams were launched in the sixties right through to the eighties.
Mivvi Ice Cream Flavours
Although it was the Strawberry flavour that proved most popular and the flavour you’d most commonly find in the shop freezer, there were a couple of other flavours of Mivvi Ice Creams too:
- Cornish Strawberry Mivvi
- Raspberry Mivvi
- Pineapple Mivvi
What was a Strawberry Mivvi?
Mivvi Ice Creams had an ice cream centre and were covered with a frozen, flavoured ice layer. They were similar to the Solero ice cream lollies we can buy today. The ice cream was always Cornish vanilla whilst the outer ice lolly would be one of three different flavours – strawberry, raspberry or pineapple.
What does Mivvi mean?
According to the Urban Dictionary, “Mivvi” means “a type of fruity ice cream treat”. It certainly was a treat!
Can you still buy a Strawberry Mivvi?
Lyons Maid who first made Mivvi Ice Creams was bought by Nestlé in 1992. Nestlé have made Mivvi Ice Creams, including the Strawberry flavour since they took over, but a recent search both online and in various supermarkets hasn’t found any of the popular Strawberry Mivvi or the other flavours available in UK supermarkets.
There are other, similar products such as the Solero, and most supermarkets have their own versions.
