A Look Back at the Onken Frufoo Yoghurt
If you were a child in the nineties, then you’ll probably remember the Onken Frufoo yoghurt. It’s one of those retro foods that has stuck in my mind over the years. Whether it was the unusual shape of the plastic pot, or the fact that every yoghurt contained a free toy inside, there was something about these yoghurts that really stood out.
The Onken Frufoo Yoghurt
Onken is a German dairy company initially created by Mr. Enno Onken back in the 1940s. Since then, Onken have created all kinds of different yoghurts.
The Frufoo yoghurt was created with kids in mind. The yoghurt pots were shaped like little UFOs with the yoghurt sitting in the outer ring and a cheap plastic toy hiding in the middle. Much like the Kinder Surprise egg toys so many children look forward to receiving, this was a great marketing ploy by Onken.
This was a fun yoghurt for children and it only came in Strawberry flavour which in my experience is the flavour that most kids like more than any other.

The hidden toys in Frufoo yoghurts were all small plastic aliens fitting in perfectly with the UFO theme.
Onken Frufoo Yoghurt Advert
I can’t actually remember seeing an advert for this yoghurt in the UK. But there was definitely one in Germany. Over there, it was called Frufos and even though this advert is in German, it’s still useful to watch. It shows that the plastic pot was intended to be in the shape of a UFO.
We see the UFO coming down to earth from space, flying in through a kitchen window and landing on the table. The lid lifts and we see an alien wearing a space suit rise out from the centre of the pot.
The advert also showed some of the various plastic alien figures that children could collect.
Can You Still Buy Onken Frufoo Yoghurts?
Sadly, as with many treats from our childhoods, you can’t buy the Onken Frufoo Yoghurt today. They were discontinued by Onken in the 2000s.
There are lots of other options for children (and adults) who enjoy novelty yoghurts though including the Crunch Corner Style Yogurt which feature two compartments, one with the yoghurt and another with things like biscuit or fruit.
Tasty yogurt has always been a popular after dinner dessert for children, and parents like to know that their children are getting some of their all-important calcium daily allowance whilst kids enjoyed knowing that they would get a free toy inside every Frufoo yogurt.
