Cadbury Bournville Old Jamaica Chocolate Bar

Do you remember the Cadbury Bournville Old Jamaica chocolate bar? It was first launched back in the 1970s and was a real hit with dark chocolate lovers.

What is the Old Jamaica Chocolate Bar?

Back when the bars were first sold in the 1970s, the Old Jamaica was a combination of milk and plain chocolate with rum-flavoured raisins.

As with many of the old retro flavours, over the years, the bars changed and many customer reviews claim that they just don’t taste the way that they used to.

The Cadbury Bournville Old Jamaica Chocolate Bar Advert

I’ve searched the internet high and low to try to bring you a video of the advert for the Old Jamaica bar, but so far I haven’t managed to find it anywhere.

I believe the advert featured a pirate – “yo ho ho and the flavour of rum”, “don’t yee knock it all back in one go”.

Can I still buy the Old Jamaica bar?

Cadbury discontinued the Old Jamaica bar much to the disappointment of fans of the rum flavour bars of chocolate.

Over the years that followed, the Bournville brand ran the odd limited edition of the popular bars.

Then, in 2020, following a Facebook petition, Cadbury announced that they were relaunching their Bournville Old Jamaica chocolate bar, and you can still buy them today. Cadbury had asked their followers which of their old chocolate bars they would love to see returning to supermarket shelves, and the results spoke for themselves. The Old Jamaica Bar was a clear winner. At the time, Bournville Brand Manager Bethany Wenn stated – “We’re really excited to bring back the return of Bournville Old Jamaica bar.” And so many dark chocolate rum lovers are so glad they listened.

In the run-up to the relaunch, Cadbury stated – “This delicious dark chocolate is one to be savoured. It is the perfect choice for the more mature palettes and a real treat to enjoy, whether it be for the ultimate night in with friends, or even at a dinner party.”

You can buy the retro chocolate bars in either 100g or 180g. They are now made with dark chocolate but still have the delicious rum-flavoured raisins inside.

  1. This was a special treat when I was growing up and I always look for it in the chocolate section of supermarket aisles. I think my taste has matured along with me, so the dark chocolate version is lovely.
