Salt and Shake Crisps
Do you remember Salt and Shake Crisps? They were made by Smith’s Crisps when they first came out way back in the 1920s, making them one of the very first crisps to be sold in the UK. Back in the early days, they were actually called Salt ‘n’ Shake before later being renamed as Salt & Shake Crisps.
What are Salt and Shake Crisps
These crisps were sold without any salt or flavouring and they came with a separate salt sachet allowing you to put on as much or as little as you like before shaking the bag to mix the salt around.

Yes, you can still buy Salt and Shake Crisps today!
The original Smith’s Crisps were bought out by American company Pepsico in the 1990s. Pepsico decided to ditch Smith’s brand and use the Walkers Snack Foods Ltd name instead. And so Walkers Salt & Shake Crisps were born. As with the original crisps, they still come with a small packet of salt. They also still have a reference to the days they were sold under the Smith’s brand with “Originally Smiths” written on the packets.
These crisps did disappear from shop shelves for a while but Walkers brought them back in 2003 and they’ve hung around since then.
You can buy them in individual packs or as multipacks.
What’s the big deal?
OK, so when it comes down to it, these are just the same as ready salted crisps. But, there is definitely a bit of a novelty about the sachets of salt inside each pack. I remember as a child shaking a few drops of vinegar into the packet before then shaking the salt packet in too. The result was a bit of a soggy mess, but for some reason, I insisted on doing it every time I ate Salt & Shake crisps!
