Let’s Remember Piglets Crisps
The eighties was an incredible decade in terms of snacks, and Piglets crisps are right up there with the best of them.
What were Piglets Crisps?
Piglet crisps were potato crisps made in the shape of 3D pigs. They were made by Burton’s Foods in the early 1980s and looking back they have to be one of my favourites of all the retro crisps from my childhood. Unlike normal crisps, they were a puffy kind of snack, similar to the potato puff crisps also made by Burton’s.
What flavours of Piglets crisps were there?
There were a few different flavours in the Piglets range of crisps. Obviously, there was smokey bacon. There was also pickled onion flavour too which was my favourite. My research on this savoury snack suggests that there was also a baked beans flavour piglets crisps too! I’m not sure that would have been one I’d have gone for!
What did they taste like?
Piglet crisps tasted similar to many other potato snacks. During the cooking process, they were deep fried which is what caused the pig-shaped snacks to pop into 3D piglets. They were crunchy snacks that kind of melted slightly if you let them sit on your tongue and released all the flavouring. They were the perfect snack for kids.
Can you still buy Piglets crisps today?
Sadly, like many of the great classic snacks from the eighties, you can’t still buy these amazing piglet potato snacks today, but there are some alternatives that you could try such as Hula Hoops Puft which come in a range of different flavours.
Piglets were always one of the cheaper of the amazing potato-based snacks around in the eighties, so they made a popular choice for kids spending their pocket money in the local corner shop. Do you remember them? What was your favourite flavour?
