Red, White & Blue Jell-O Cups (Kid-Friendly & Alcohol-Free!)

Every summer, I look forward to bringing a little red, white, and blue flair to our family gatherings, and these Jell-O cups never disappoint. They’re bright, festive, and just plain fun to make! I’ve been making a version of these for years, and the kids always get so excited when they see them lined up in the fridge, all wiggly and colorful. Plus, there’s no alcohol in these, so everyone can enjoy them, from toddlers to grandparents.

One thing I really love about these Jell-O cups is how easy they are to customize. You can use different flavors of Jell-O, play around with the order of the layers, or even swap in different toppings. I’ve tried them with just whipped cream, but adding those red, white, and blue sprinkles on top really makes them pop. And they look so pretty on a party table, definitely a conversation starter!

They do take a little time to prep since you’ve gotta let each layer set before moving on to the next, but honestly? It’s totally worth it. I like to make them the night before so they’re ready to go the next day. If you’re looking for a fun and festive treat that’s kid-friendly and perfect for Memorial Day, the 4th of July, or any patriotic holiday, these little cups are just the thing.

Ingredients

  • 1 box of blue Jell-O (e.g., berry blue): This forms the bottom layer of your cups and gives them that bold, patriotic pop of blue.
  • 1 cup boiling water: Used to dissolve the blue Jell-O completely—make sure it’s fully mixed before adding cold water.
  • 1 cup cold water: Added after the boiling water to cool the mixture down so it can set properly.
  • 2 packets of unflavored gelatin: This helps create the creamy white middle layer and gives it a nice, firm texture.
  • ½ cup cold water (for blooming the gelatin): Let the gelatin sit in this water for a few minutes so it “blooms” and dissolves evenly.
  • 1 cup boiling water: Used to dissolve the bloomed gelatin before mixing in the sweetened condensed milk.
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk: Adds creamy sweetness and that perfect white color for the center layer.
  • 1 box of red Jell-O (e.g., cherry or strawberry): This bright, fruity layer finishes things off with a cheerful splash of red on top.
  • 1 cup boiling water: Used again here to dissolve the red Jell-O completely before chilling.
  • 1 cup cold water: Helps bring down the temperature of the red Jell-O so you don’t melt the layers below.
  • Whipped cream (for garnish): A fun and fluffy topping to finish each cup right before serving.
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles (for garnish): Adds a festive touch and a little crunch to each sweet and jiggly bite.

5. Add 1 cup boiling water and stir until the gelatin is completely dissolved.

9. Mix in 1 cup cold water.

11. Just before serving, top each Jell-O shot with a small dollop of whipped cream.

12. Sprinkle red, white, and blue sprinkles over the whipped cream for a festive finish.

Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Red, White & Blue Jell-O Shots

  • Use a pouring tool: A small measuring cup with a spout or a squeeze bottle makes it much easier to pour the Jell-O layers neatly without splashing.

  • Let each layer fully set: Be patient! Rushing the layering process can cause the colors to mix or sink. Chill each layer for 2–3 hours or until firm before adding the next.

  • Cool mixtures before pouring: Always let the white and red layers cool to room temperature before pouring them over the previous one. If they’re too warm, they can melt the layer underneath.

  • Use a tray for easy transfer: Place your shot glasses on a tray before filling so you can move them to the fridge all at once without disturbing the layers.

  • Make ahead for best results: These are perfect for prepping the night before. The longer chill time helps the flavors set and gives you less to do on party day.

  • Skip the whipped cream until serving: Add whipped cream and sprinkles just before serving so they stay fresh and fluffy, not soggy or melted.

  • Try different flavors: Berry blue and cherry are classics, but feel free to get creative with flavors like raspberry, watermelon, or even coconut for the white layer.

  • Want them firmer?: If you’d like a firmer texture, you can reduce the amount of cold water slightly in the blue and red layers.
