The Texan Bar – A Tasty Chewy Treat
They just don’t make them like they used to, and that’s definitely true of the Texan Bar. These tasty sweet treats were made back in the seventies and eighties and they were absolutely delicious. The bars were first manufactured by Rowntree’s who were later bought by chocolate giants Nestlé in 1988.
But what was so special about them? What did they taste like and most importantly, can you still buy Texan chocolate bars in the shops today?
What did the Texan Bar taste like?
Texan bars consisted of chewy nougat on the inside with a delicious milk chocolate coating. They could be a little hard if you tried to eat them straight from the fridge so I remember my Mum used to keep them in the kitchen cupboard so they weren’t too cold and too tough on your teeth.
Some people did like the hard texture of these bars when they were cold though and I remember one friend whose Mum always used to put Texan bars in the freezer and snap off a chunk each day to chew on.
The Texan Bar Advert
The advert featured a cowboy tied up on a stake ready to be burned by some Red Indians.
“Hold on there Bald Eagle. You wouldn’t fire a man til he’s finished his Texan Bar would you? Bite through the chocolate and chew real slow.”
By the time the cowboy finishes chewing, the Red Indians have collapsed in exhaustion. “Someone should have told them the Texan bar takes time to chew. Texan, sure is a mighty chew.”
Can you still buy Texan bars?
Nestlé did bring Texan bars back for a short time in 2005. But sadly they only reappeared for a short amount of time before being discontinued again.
Why were Texan chocolate bars discontinued?
No one is sure why they were discontinued as they were so popular! Maybe somebody should start up a petition to get Texan bars back on our shelves once again.
In a poll of the top sweet treats taken in 2004, the Texan bar won by a landslide, so it doesn’t make any sense that you can’t buy them any more.
Texan Chocolate Bar Ingredients
Sadly, as the chewy British chocolate bars have been out of circulation for such a long time, it’s not been possible to track down a list of ingredients. But they definitely contained chewy nougat and milk chocolate.
Alternatives to the Texan bar
As with all discontinued chocolate bars, it’s almost impossible to find anything that comes even close to the chewy, delicious chocolate and nougat taste of the Texan bar. But you could try Cadbury’s Boost.
It’s always difficult to understand why big brands pull items that are so popular. Perhaps much-loved chocolate brand Nestlé will bring these bars back to our shelves soon. We can only hope!
